Build your players’ strength, agility and explosive power with ball orientated plyometric training, enabling them to run faster, jump higher and burst into the box to score more goals

Watch him go! That will be the response of the crowd and the opposition when they see your players passing defenders, running onto balls and exploding down the wings with explosive power. Ball Orientated Soccer Training – Drills to Develop Explosive Power is a special video series that shows you how to coach a complete plyometric training session that will give your players that extra yard so they can win more balls and score more goals.

Dear Coach,

Ibrahimovic, Drogba and Ronaldo are all able to shrug off defenders and make devastating runs into the box thanks to their explosive power. The ability to make sudden changes in pace, to jump higher and to accelerate past defenders can be a decisive advantage that can turn average forwards into star players. You can give your players this advantage with plyometric training.

One way of developing explosive power is to endlessly work out in the gym. Building up leg muscles is a great way to build strength and power, but it doesn’t develop the agility players will need to harness it in game situations. What’s more, time spent in the gym is less time spent with the ball developing technical skills. So the best type of training is one that builds strength, agility and technique at the same time.

Wojtkun“Working with keepers and field players from youth through the college level, we continue to reinforce the importance of being explosive.  This new video series on developing explosive power gives me great ideas on  how to work with my playes to get them to another level physically.  Coach Justin has done a great job of showing the principles of explosive power and I can readily add this component to teaching goalkeepers and make them better technically and athletically.” – Jim Wojtkun, Associate Head Women’s Soccer Coach, Baldwin Wallace University

“Discover how to harness plyometric training to develop a stronger, more agile and more flexible team”

Plyometric training first rose to prominence in the 1970s as a training method used by the East German Olympics team. Since then plyomterics has evolved from a training technique used by high jumpers and track and field athletes to one embraced by coaches in all sports. This is because the dynamic resistance exercises used in a plyometrics session have been proven to be a highly effective at improving muscle strength, agility and explosive power.

Plyometric exercises focus on training the muscles to exert more force in as short a time as possible. This is done by moving the muscle from a contraction to rapidly becoming extended. Dynamic resistance exercises which promote quicker extensions, or a ‘myotactic’ reflex, naturally improve the muscles responsiveness and power. The result is that players can jump higher, perform rapid changes in pace or direction and the strength to shrug off defenders.

While plyometrics offers many benefits for muscle strength, agility and speed, it’s important that players have a good ‘base strength’ before performing them. Consequently, the training session outlined in Ball Orientated Soccer Training – Drills to Develop Explosive Power are best suited to players with developed muscle strength.
