Very interestig article and as a former player and a coach for more than thirty years I have long held the view that certainly at the grass root level far too many coaches appear to be developing athletes rather than soccer players.
WHY? Warm Up, fitness training etc, where the kids NEVER see a soccer ball.
If for example the coach has one weekly practice session consisting of one hour then why on earth WASTE 10 - 15minutes having the kids run round and roud the pitch and not a ball in sight ? Even in this example then who not let each kid run with a ball ?
